About this map

Baker Valley transitions from the agricultural lowlands of the northeast to the dense timber of the Whitman National Forest in this 1993 revision. The settlement of Wingville serves as a central landmark for local family historians, anchored by the Wingville Cem and connected by the long-established Wingville Road. To the west, the landscape rises into the drainage basins of the Baker City Watershed, where the terrain is carved by numerous gulches and creeks, including Washington Gulch and Salmon Creek. Evidence of the region’s extractive history is found in the uplands, where the Stub Mine and Young America Mine are situated among the ridges. The map captures a sophisticated water management network, including the Salmon Creek Aqueduct and Settlers Slough, which were vital for the valley's irrigation and the municipal needs of the nearby county seat.
