The Kau Forest Reserve and the western edge of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park define this landscape on the island of Hawaii. Recorded in the mid-1960s, the terrain is dominated by volcanic features, including the stark Great Crack and the ancient Keaiwa Lava Flow of 1823. Evidence of early settlement and agriculture is clustered in the southwest at the Wood Valley Homesteads, where a local Cemetery and the Wood Valley Camp are situated near the lush Waiakalao Gulch.
