The Mission Range dominates the western portion of this landscape, its steep drainages feeding a network of alpine streams that flow toward Swan Lake. This 2024 survey documents the dense corridor of recreational and conservation lands within the Flathead National Forest, where the topography is defined by sharp elevation changes and numerous named waterways. At the southern end of the lake, the Swan River National Wildlife Refuge marks a critical transition into wetland and riparian habitat near the mouth of Yew Creek.
