The confluence of the Rio Puerco and the Rio Grande dominates this Socorro County landscape, showing the complex network of irrigation and drainage infrastructure essential to the Rio Grande Valley. Settlements like Abeytas, Bernardo, and San Francisco sit along the western bank of the river, connected by historic transportation routes such as Old Hwy 60 and Old Hwy 85. The modern corridor of Interstate 25 cuts through the valley, passing the Rio Puerco Bridge and skirting the base of Picho Hill.

Evidence of long-standing local community is visible at the Abeytas Cem and in the numerous family-named roads like Ramon Lopez Rd and Griego's.
