The John Day River carves a path through this section of Grant County, where the high desert meets the forested slopes of the Aldrich Mountains. Much of the southern landscape is defined by the Malhuer National Forest, a terrain of significant elevation changes marked by Aldrich Mountain and Little Aldrich Mtn. The map preserves a glimpse of the area's human history through solitary landmarks such as the Aldrich Grave and the curiously named Dead Pine near Chilkoot Pass.
