Salt Creek meanders through the heart of this landscape, its winding course defining the transition between the Morgan and Monroe State Forest to the north and the expansive Hoosier National Forest to the south. In the late 1950s, the area remained a tapestry of small rural communities and timbered ridges, prior to the large-scale changes brought by later reservoir construction. The settlement of Fairfax sits near a prominent bend in the river, while the tiny hamlet of Handy is situated further west.
