The Snake River carves a deep path through this portion of the Palouse, dividing Whitman and Garfield counties. The settlement of Almota sits on the northern bank near the head of Lake Bryan, while the community of Mayview is positioned on the high plateau to the south. This 2017 survey documents the modern topography after the construction of the Lower Granite Dam, which transformed the free-flowing river into Lower Granite Lake.
