About this map

The Ohio River carves a dramatic oxbow through this borderland region between Indiana and Kentucky, defining the life and layout of small river settlements. Along the northern banks in Indiana, the Hoosier National Forest covers much of the land, protecting features like Buzzard Roost and Dark Hollow. In the sharpest bend of the river, Magnet sits opposite Willets Bottom, while the village of Alton occupies the high ground near the mouth of the Little Blue River. On the Kentucky side, the terrain shifts into a complex network of ridges and depressions, most notably the Jarbo Sinks near Rhodelia. This area is characterized by family-named landmarks and rural infrastructure, from the Stephenson Cem near Dexter to the winding paths of Mooleyville-Ammons Rd, reflecting a landscape deeply shaped by its limestone geology and historic river crossings.
