The Noatak National Preserve encompasses most of this landscape, protecting a vast watershed within the Baird Mountains. The topography is defined by the winding course of the Noatak River, specifically the segment designated as the Noatak Wild and Scenic River, which meanders across the northern portion of the sheet. This sub-arctic environment is further characterized by numerous braided tributaries and smaller drainages that feed into the larger system.
