About this map

The Mississippi River creates a wide natural divide between the riverbank communities of Andalusia and Buffalo in this mid-century survey. On the Illinois side, the landscape is defined by the extensive Upper Mississippi River Wild Life and Fish Refuge, which encompasses a series of river islands such as Island No 317 and Island No 319 separated by the Wild Life and Fish Refuge sloughs. This riparian environment contrasts sharply with the upland farming terrain to the south, where the drainage of Fancy Creek and Turkey Hollow Creek cuts through the bluffs.
