The Applegate River defines the southern portion of this landscape at the Josephine and Jackson County line, where the small settlements of Applegate and Provolt are situated. The valley floor is characterized by an intricate network of irrigation features, including the Watts and Topping Ditch and the New Berryman Ditch, which support the agricultural life of the region. To the north, the terrain rises sharply into a series of named gulches and ridges, such as Schoolhouse Gulch and Bald Hill, illustrating the transition from riverbed farming to timbered uplands.
