Arcata and its surrounding redwood coast communities are defined by the winding course of the Mad River, which flows past the agricultural flats of the Arcata Bottoms toward the Pacific Ocean. This 2012 survey documents the residential expansion in McKinleyville and the academic footprint of Humboldt State University at the southern edge of the map. Inland, the landscape transitions from the coastal terrace of Dows Prairie to the wooded drainages of Lindsay Creek and Mather Creek. Traces of the region's industrial past are visible in the path of the Old Railroad Grade Rd near Fieldbrook. Small settlements such as Korblex, Essex, and Glendale cluster along the river and rail corridors, while local heritage is preserved at sites like Greenwood Cemetery and Saint Marys Cemetery.
