Au Sable Point projects into the cold waters of Lake Superior along this isolated stretch of the Michigan shoreline. The landscape is defined by the protected boundaries of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, where the terrain rises from the beach to higher wooded elevations. Human presence is marked by primitive access routes and hiking corridors, most notably the N Country National Scenic Trail which winds parallel to the coast. The drainage of the Hurricane River and the small basin of Sullivan Lake illustrate the local hydrology, feeding into the Great Lake. Small clearings like Sullivans Landing and the utility of Coast Guard Rd suggest a history of maritime safety and seasonal access in this wilderness area of Alger County.
