The Farmington River carves a deep valley through this mid-century landscape, separating the residential expansion of Avon and Simsbury from the steep wooded ridges of Talcott Mountain. High atop the ridge, the Heublein Tower and King Phillips Cave overlook a network of water works, including Hartford Reservoir No. 6 and No. 5. This era reflects a transition from rural crossroads like Crowleys Corner and Alsop Corner to established institutional centers, evidenced by the large campuses of the Avon Old Farms School and Ethel Walker School.
