About this map

Beaverhead National Forest defines the high country in this corner of Beaverhead County, where the landscape transitions from the timbered slopes of Bachelor Mountain to the broad, open expanse of Horse Prairie. This area is characterized by a complex network of seasonal drainages and irrigation infrastructure, notably the Mansfield-Prohosky Ditch and Pierce Ditch, which redirect water across the arid flats to support local ranching operations. The terrain is punctuated by distinctive landmarks like Red Butte and the broad level reaches of Coyote Flats and Poverty Flats. The hydrology of the basin is anchored by Horse Prairie Creek, which collects numerous tributaries including the colorfully named Bloody Dick Creek and Dunlap Creek. A few primitive routes, such as Watson Creek Rd and Bachelor Mountain Rd, provide the only access through this sparse, high-elevation ranching territory.
