The river's winding course is marked by several bars, including Swiss Bar, Kanaka Bar, and Stalman Bar, which reflect the area's diverse ethnic mining history.

Evidence of early 20th-century social infrastructure appears as vanished landmarks, such as the Honolulu Sch (Site) near Gottville and the Mone Sch (Site) in the Humbug Creek drainage. The rugged terrain is etched with dozens of named gulches, from Deadman Gulch to Brushy Gulch, while the community of Hawkinsville and the outskirts of Yreka sit at the southern edge of the sheet, connected by the historic Yreka Road.
