The Klamath River carves a winding path through the northern reach of Klamath National Forest, defining a landscape historically shaped by placer mining and scattered settlements. At the edge of the river, river bars such as Kanaka Bar, Woodrat Bar, and Swiss Bar reflect the riparian geography that once drew prospectors to this terrain. Former centers of local community are preserved as archaeological sites, including the Honolulu Sch (Site) and the Mono Sch (Site).

Evidence of the region's mining heritage is prominent near Humbug Creek, where the Humbug Placer Area and the Sisykiyou Mine (Site) indicate where gold was sought in the rugged drainages. To the south, the settlement of Hawkinsville and the northern outskirts of Yreka signal the transition toward more established residential areas. Modern recreation is represented by the Tree of Heaven Campground, while peaks like China Peak and Badger Mtn tower over the network of gulches and creeks feeding into the main river channel.
