The Clatsop State Forest covers much of this Columbia County landscape, where the Clatskanie River and its tributary, the Little Clatskanie River, carve through the terrain. Evidence of the region's timber and resource management is visible through the network of roads, jeep trails, and numerous extraction sites such as the Oak Ranch Pit and various other locations marked simply as Quarry. Local landmarks like Baker Point and Mount Cedara provide prominent topographic relief above the winding watercourses of Lava Creek and Carous Creek.
