Redwood National Park dominates the western portion of this topographic survey, where the deep drainage of Bridge Creek cuts through steep, forested ridges. The landscape is characterized by a series of open grassy uplands, or prairies, that punctuate the dense timber, such as Hog Prairie, Thompson Prairie, and Cagle Prairie. These natural openings along the higher elevations provided historical transit corridors and grazing lands above the heavily wooded creek bottoms.
