Banner Summit serves as the focal point for this mountain landscape where the borders of Boise and Custer Counties meet. This portion of the Challis National Forest and Boise National Forest is defined by a dense network of alpine water bodies and drainage basins. High-elevation features like Copper Mtn overlook a series of isolated basins containing Newman Lake, Dutch Lake, and the cluster at Bull Trout Lakes. The drainage patterns are clearly visible through the paths of Iron-Lola Creek and Swamp Creek, illustrating the complex hydrology of the Salmon River Mountains. Transport through this high country is limited to historic routes such as the Stanley / Landmark Trail Rd #1 and SH-21, tracing the paths of early travelers and forest rangers through the Sawtooth area.
