About this map

Bantry and the surrounding plains of McHenry County are shown here during a period of transition in the mid-century. This survey was conducted as part of the Department of the Interior program for the development of the Missouri River Basin, documenting the prairie landscape before significant modern changes. The Great Northern railroad cuts a sharp diagonal through the terrain, serving as the primary corridor for the small grain-elevator settlements of Bantry and Milroy. The rural education system of the time is clearly visible through the placement of Medicine Lodge School No 3 and Medicine Lodge School No 1, which anchored the scattered farming community. The map also delineates the civil townships of Bantry and Wagner, providing a precise look at local administrative boundaries and isolated landmarks like a lone Cem in the southwest corner.
