Herbster sits at the western edge of this coastal landscape, where the Bark River flows into the expansive Bark Bay of Lake Superior. The terrain transitions from the marshy lowlands of the river mouth to the higher elevations of the Chequamegon National Forest in the south. Two prominent peninsulas, Bark Point and Roman Point, define the shoreline, protecting smaller inlets like Siskiwit Bay.
