Beaufort Sea waters meet the North Slope coastline here, creating a complex maritime environment of barrier features and tidal inlets. The prominent Tapkaurak Spit and Tapkaurak Point define the western shoreline, shielding the coastal interior from the open sea. Further east, the Oruktalik Entrance provides a narrow passage into the protected waters of Oruktalik Lagoon, a significant coastal feature situated just west of Griffin Point. Inland, the landscape is defined by the braided drainage systems of the Niguanak River and John River, which meander through the marshy tundra. This survey documents the intersection of Arctic hydrology and coastal landforms, illustrating how the river outlets interact with the lagoon systems before reaching the open ocean.
