The Susquehanna River carves a deep horseshoe bend through the center of this Tioga County landscape, defining the character of Barton and Nichols. In the late 1960s, this corridor remained a vital transportation artery, with both the Lehigh Valley and Erie-Lackawanna railroads paralleling the river's path. These rail lines supported local industry, evidenced by the Gravel Pit near Hoopers Valley.

Upland from the river, the terrain is marked by numerous family-named hills and hollows, such as Oak Hill and Frost Hollow. Small communities and vanished rural centers are preserved through their burial grounds, including the Prospect Hill Cem and Barton Center Cem. The presence of Asbury Ch and Emory Chapel reflects the established social fabric of these valley settlements during an era of transition for rural New York and the bordering Pennsylvania line.
