Challis National Forest encompasses this high-altitude landscape of central Idaho, defined by a complex network of alpine watercourses and high ridges. The hydrologic system is centered on Bayhorse Lake and its smaller counterpart, Little Bayhorse Lake, which feed the drainages of Bayhorse Creek. To the north, the terrain ascends toward Mill Creek Summit, where the headwaters of Mill Creek and Pack Creek originate. This area is historically significant for its high-country access, illustrated by a dense system of trails and primitive roads such as the Challis-Cripine Summit Roads Trail and the Buster Lake Road Trail.
