The Clackamas Wild and Scenic River and its major tributaries define this high-elevation landscape in Clackamas County. In the modern era, much of the area remains protected within the Mount Hood National Forest and the Clackamas Wilderness, preserving a network of drainage basins including Memaloose Creek and Hellion Creek. The steep topography is anchored by Bedford Point and the prominent Big Cliff overlooking the river valley.
