The Upper Mississippi River Wild Life and Fish Refuge dominates this stretch of the river, where the border between Iowa and Illinois is defined by a complex network of islands and sloughs like Harris Slough and Stone Slough. On the Iowa bank, the town of Bellevue is a focal point of activity, anchored by Lock and Dam No 12 and the adjacent Bellevue State Park. The landscape reflects a legacy of river-based commerce and early industry, evidenced by the many mines and quarries scattered throughout the bluffs. Significant infrastructure for the mid-20th century includes the Savanna Army Depot and the convergence of three major rail lines: the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific, the Chicago and North Western, and the Chicago Burlington and Quincy. Local history is well-preserved through numerous burial sites including St Joseph Cem and Potter Cem.
