The town of Belmont serves as the focal point for this late-twentieth-century study of the Belknap County interior. The landscape is defined by its transition from water-powered industry to managed conservation, evidenced by the numerous state lands including Sanborn State Forest and Meadow Pond State Forest. Small nineteenth-century industrial footprints are still visible at Aliens Mills and Jones Mills, where the local stream network once supported regional mill activity.

Elevations rise toward the eastern boundary with peaks like Whiteface Mtn and Peaked Hill, while the lowlands are saturated with recreational and natural water bodies. Large ponds and lakes such as Sawyer Lake, Shellcamp Pond, and Sargent Lake punctuate the terrain. To the south, the boundary with Loudon is marked by the prominent Loudon Ridge, while the western edge reaches toward the community of Northfield and the wooded tracts of Shaker State Forest.
