Benkelman occupies the high ground above the confluence of the Republican River and the S Fork Republican River in southwestern Nebraska. This 2014 survey documents the town's street grid and its position as a regional hub near the Kansas state line, where the local economy follows the river valley and the rail corridor of Railroad St E. Outside the residential center, the landscape is defined by a series of north-south canyons and seasonal drainage ways including Spring Cr, Big Timber Cr, and Barnes Cr. Small-scale aviation and cemetery sites are prominent local landmarks, with Hoppy's Airport to the north and Jones Airport closer to the town site, alongside the Benkelman Cem. The map illustrates the transition from the irrigated river bottomlands to the upland plains, intersected by a network of numbered rural routes like Road 709 and Avenue 337.
