The Suwannee River carves a winding path through the borderlands of Hamilton and Columbia Counties, defining the drainage of this low-lying North Florida landscape. At the settlement of Benton, the river begins a series of tight oxbow bends as it flows south toward River Swamp. The terrain is characterized by extensive wetlands and isolated water bodies, including Sandlin Bay, Hooker Bay, and Brown Lake.
