Lake Sakakawea dominates the northern reaches of this landscape, its waters filling Beulah Bay and Renner Bay along the border of McLean and Mercer counties. The shoreline is marked by newer developments such as Lake Shore Est, while the surrounding prairie remains defined by a rigid section-line road grid. Family and community heritage is preserved in several rural burial grounds, including Koehler Cem, Kronthal Cem, and Peace Cem, which serve as the primary landmarks for researchers of the area's pioneer genealogy. In the south, the terrain drains toward the meandering Antelope Cr, illustrating the transition from the high-water marks of the reservoir to the agricultural plains typical of this part of North Dakota. The presence of ND-1806 provides the main arterial connection through this sparsely settled region.
