Piñon Mesa anchors the southern portion of this high-altitude landscape, where the headwaters of numerous drainages have carved a complex network of canyons. The Little Dolores River flows across the northern reaches, joined by Bieser Creek and Wilderness Cr as they cut through the high plateau. This terrain is characterized by its dramatic vertical relief, evidenced by the clustered names of Kings Canyon, Cook Canyon, and McKenzie Canyon.
