Tahoe Ridge and The Horn dominate this landscape, which straddles the boundary between the Clearwater National Forest and Nez Perce National Forest. The geography is defined by the steep drainage basins leading toward the Middle Fork Clearwater River in the northeast corner. While much of the area is characterized by forest and timberland, the settlement of Big Cedar and the nearby Tahoe Cemetery provide evidence of local mountain communities and early homesteading efforts. The network of creeks, including Big Cedar Creek, Little Cedar Creek, and Clear Creek, illustrates the complex hydrologic pattern that dictated travel and resource use in the Idaho wilderness. Evidence of industrial activity appears at the Gravel Pit near Crane Hill, while the Selway Clearwater route suggests the importance of trail and road access through these high ridges.
