Big Gum Swamp dominates this landscape on the border of Columbia and Baker Counties, where the terrain is defined by a dense network of wetlands and forested bays. Part of the Osceola National Forest, the region shows very little human development apart from timber-related access like the Seventeenmile Camp Road. Named terrain features such as Big Island, Cross Island, and Maple Head reveal slightly higher ground amidst the surrounding Buckhead Swamp and Little Gum Swamp.

The northeastern corner of the sheet transitions toward the Middle Prong St Marys River, while the southern portion is managed as the Osceola State Wildlife Management Area. Local place names like Impassable Bay and Williams Bay indicate the historical difficulty of navigating this interior Florida wilderness. The presence of Seventeenmile Camp and a southern Rest Area near Pony Dobson Road provide the few reference points for 20th-century activity in this preserved environment.
