Salem and the nearby Salem Cem anchor the northwestern reaches of this Oklahoma landscape, where the terrain is defined by a dense network of named peaks and hollows. The boundary between Adair County and Sequoyah County cuts across the southern portion of the sheet near Nicut and Little Round Mtn. Numerous watercourses, including Little Lee Cr and Jenkins Cr, wind through these steep valleys, which are often named for local families or landmarks, such as John Watie Hollow and Sally Bull Hollow.
