Malheur National Forest encompasses this section of the Aldrich Mountains, where high ridges and deep drainages define the landscape. The area is marked by a complex network of named water sources and topographic landmarks, including the prominent Fields Peak and the geological formation at Tex Creek Arch. The northern extent is bounded by Chrome Ridge and Big Canyon, while the southern reaches are dominated by the flow of Murderers Cr and its S Fork Murderers Cr. Historical land use is suggested by the numerous named springs throughout the terrain, such as China Hat Spring, Little Weasel Spring, and Frankie and Johnny Spring. Small-scale mining legacy is preserved in the naming of Oregon Mine Cr, which flows north toward Fields Cr.
