The Sweet Grass Hills rise prominently along the northern border of Liberty County, where the frontier between the United States and Canada is marked by the rugged topography of north-central Montana. This high-altitude terrain is dominated by significant peaks such as East Butte and Black Jack Butte, which loom over a network of deeply etched coulees and seasonal drainages. The landscape's drainage patterns are defined by the paths of Police Creek and Laird Creek, which cut through the complex elevation of the foothills.
