Several named claims such as the Charter Oak Mines, Negros Mine, and the Golden Anchor Mine are concentrated on the slopes of Negro Mountain, highlighting the area's history of mineral exploration. These sites are accessed by a network of unimproved roads and the Scenic Trail winding through the high country.

The topography is anchored by the Little Blackfoot River and its upper tributaries, including Ontario Creek and Sawmill Creek. In the south, the Blackfoot Meadows provide a rare level opening among the steep ridges of Bison Mountain and Forbidding Ridge.
