1966 Map of Bisti Trading Post

USGS Topo · Published 1969

About this map

Navajo Indian Reservation lands dominate this mid-century landscape in San Juan County, where the topography transitions from high mesas into the eroded drainage of Hunter Wash. The namesake Bisti Trading Post serves as the primary landmark in this sparsely settled region, situated just east of a network of unimproved roads and several Mines that suggest the area's mineral exploration history. Industrial development is further indicated by a long Pipeline cutting across the southeastern corner and a recorded Drill Hole in the northern section. This survey, based on 1965 aerial photography and field-checked in 1966, documents the traditional grazing and resource landscape before more modern infrastructure changes reached this part of the Southwest.
