Grand River meanders across this northern South Dakota landscape, defining the character of the terrain in the Rock Creek District. The small community of Black Horse is situated on the eastern edge of the map, overlooking the river's deep bends. The geography is marked by significant drainages including Little Soldier Cr, Dirt Lodge Cr, and Soldier Cr, which cut through the high plains toward the river valley. To the south, Clay Butte rises as a prominent landmark above the Louse Cr watershed. This 2017 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey illustrates the intersection of these traditional watercourses with the modern section-line grid of the Public Land Survey System, showing how the natural hydrology of Corson County continues to dictate the placement of roads and settlements.
