Barkerville and the surrounding desert landscape of Pinal County are defined by a complex network of seasonal drainages that navigate the high desert floor. The area is dominated by significant topographical markers like Black Mtn and Jerky Butte, while the Tortilla Mountains rise in the northeast corner. Historically, life here centered around water access and ranching, evidenced by Double Tanks and the presence of small settlements like Oak Wells. Modern recreation and conservation are represented by the Arizona National Scenic Trail, which cuts across the northern landscape near Putnam Wash. The road network, including N Barkerville Rd and Willow Springs Rd, follows the natural contours of Haystack Valley and connects these remote outposts in a terrain carved by Bloodsucker Wash and Cottonwood Wash.
