About this map

The town of Beaver sits at the edge of high-country drainage, where the Beaver River emerges from the canyons of the Fishlake National Forest. This 2020 survey illustrates a complex irrigation landscape necessary for settlement in southern Utah, defined by a network of engineered watercourses including the Mammoth Canal, Last Chance Canal, and numerous family-named or municipal conduits like Harris Ditch, Willis Ditch, and City Ditch. To the north, the small settlement of North Creek is positioned below the prominent Last Chance Bench. The eastern half of the map rises sharply into the mountains, dominated by peaks and ridges such as Rattlesnake Peak, Johnson Peak, and Black Ridge. This geography shows the sharp transition from the valley's agricultural infrastructure to the rugged timber and grazing lands of the national forest, where drainage features like South Fork Baker Canyon and Sway Hollow carve through the high terrain.
