Lake Huron defines the eastern edge of this Michigan coastline, where the small community of Black River serves as a focal point near the mouth of its namesake waterway. The landscape is characterized by extensive wetlands such as the Black River Swamp, interspersed with small lakes including Muskrat Lake and Potvin Lake. To the north, the protected lands of Negwegon State Park follow the shoreline, while the southern portion of the sheet transitions into the Huron National Forest. Evidence of long-standing local settlement is found at Calvary Cem and the lakeshore village of Alcona, which features its own Alcona Cem. The network of backroads, such as Sand Hill Rd and Negwegon Pk Rd, provides access to the timbered interior and drainage basins of Silver Cr and Butternut Cr.
