Carlsbad Caverns National Park defines the western edge of this Eddy County landscape, where the high terrain of Guadalupe Ridge gives way to a network of deep drainages. Canyons like Maverick Canyon, Elbow Canyon, and Goat Corral Canyon cut through the limestone ridges, eventually feeding into the draws of the lower plains. The eastern half of the map centers on the small settlement of Black River Village, situated near the winding course of the Black River Village and the South Cem. This area relies on vital water sources in an arid environment, notably Blue Spring, Castle Spring, and Box Spring. The road network, including Prickly Pear Rd and Means Rd, connects these remote outposts and ranching lands, tracing the transition from the high Frontier Hills down toward the Pecos River basin.
