About this map

Aberdeen stands as the primary settlement in this portion of the Owens Valley, situated where the high desert floor meets the rising slopes of the Inyo Mountains. The landscape is defined by a complex hydraulic system designed to capture and transport the region's water, most notably the Los Angeles Aqueduct and the Aberdeen Ditch. These man-made channels cut across the valley floor alongside natural features like the Owens River and the marshy reaches of the Tulare Swamp. This 2021 survey illustrates the precarious balance of water management in eastern California, showing how the Division Cr Ditch and Blackrock Drain divert runoff through the arid terrain. To the east, the Inyo National Forest boundary protects the steep ascent of the White Inyo Range, while numerous localized water sources such as Blackrock Springs and Hines Spring dot the alluvial fans of the valley.
