Mining and timber operations define the mid-century character of the Cascade foothills in this area of the Willamette National Forest. Concentrated activity is visible north of the Blue River, where the Lucky Boy Mine, North Star Mine, and Rialto Mine sit near Renfrew Grave and Renfrew Spring. The landscape transitions from these high-altitude extraction sites to the riverside life along the Mc Kenzie River, where the Mc Kenzie Highway links the small settlements of Nimrod and Blue River.
