Broken Horn marks a pocket of development in this expanse of the Wyoming backcountry, situated where the high plains meet a complex network of seasonal drainages. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the S Fork Powder River along the eastern margin, which carves through the terrain near Salt Canyon. Numerous intermittent waterways, including Broken Horn Cr, Lone Bear Cr, and Willow Cr, create a highly textured topography of ridges and draws.
