The town of Brooklyn serves as the central hub of this Iowa landscape, situated where the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific railroad tracks bisect the terrain. The community's social and spiritual foundations are evident in the presence of the Church of the Brethren and the Calvary Cem nearby. Further south, the rural character of Scott and Lincoln townships is defined by the winding course of the North English River, while the northern portion is drained by Big Bear Creek and its tributaries. This 1960s survey documents a period when local aviation was represented by the Val-Air Landing Strip and recreation expanded at the Brooklyn-Victor Country Club.
