Mojave National Preserve covers the northern half of this desert landscape, where the volcanic forms of the Brown Buttes stand as a central landmark. The terrain is defined by a series of prominent ephemeral drainages, including the Old Dad Mountains Wash and Orange Blossom Wash, which carry runoff from the slopes of the Old Dad Mountains toward the broader basin of the Mojave Desert.
