The Satilla River meanders through the southern reaches of this landscape, defining a complex network of wetlands including McIntosh Bend, Basin Lake, and Gator Slough. This coastal plain environment is characterized by numerous bays and swamps, such as Penholoway Bay and Alligator Swamp, which separate the small settlements of Browntown and Fendig. The geography is dotted with "hammocks"—islands of hardwood vegetation in the wetlands—including Zetser Hammock and Robinson Hammock.
